Two Airmen Charged in Alcohol-Related Incident
Air Force Staff Sergeant Faces Driving Under the Influence Charge; Airman First Class Faces Underage Consumption of Alcohol Charge
Campbell County, WA—Six Service members from the 26th Air Mobility Wing were pulled over in a vehicle while heading south on Route 14 for erratic driving at 8:00 p.m. on August 5 while returning from a fishing trip at Keyhole Reservoir, located approximately 30 minutes from Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM).
The driver was Air Force Staff Sgt. Anthony R. Robles, 26, an Aerospace Ground Equipment Journeyman with the 26th Maintenance Squadron at JBLM. He was charged with Driving Under the Influence.
Air Force Airman 1st Class Claire A. Allen, 19, a Finance Specialist with the 26th Comptroller Squadron at JBLM, was also in the vehicle. She was charged with Underage Consumption of Alcohol.
The four other Service members in the vehicle, including three Marines and one Coast Guardsman also assigned to units at JBLM, did not receive any charges. However, they did spend one night in the Campbell County Sheriff’s Office Detention Facility.
No injuries or property damages were reported in this incident.
Legal Implications
In a statement released by the 26th Air Mobility Wing Legal Office at JBLM, Staff Sgt. Robles has been charged with Article 111, Drunken or Reckless Operation of a Vehicle, under the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ) and will be court-martialed. Airman 1st Class
Allen has been charged with Article 92, Failure to Obey Order or Regulation, under the UCMJ and will be given nonjudicial punishment.
The four other Service members involved in the incident will not be formally charged because they were all of legal drinking age and did not supply the alcohol. However, they will be called as witnesses at the court martial for Staff Sgt. Robles and Airman 1st Class Allen, who will be tried together.
Message from Wing Commander
“Every Service member, no matter his or her rank, should be held legally and morally responsible for his or her actions when consuming alcohol,” states Air Force Colonel Eric Miller, 26th Air Mobility Wing Commander. “Furthermore, underage drinking will not be tolerated. These incidents are tarnishing the good name of all members stationed at Joint Base Lewis-McChord. It is my sincere hope that in the future, these individuals-and all other Service members-will think twice about the damage an alcohol-related incident can do to them and others. Are a few drinks worth your career?”
